Bars Beyond Klang Valley

Kuala Lumpur may steal the limelight when it comes to Malaysia’s nightlife, but beyond the Klang Valley, there’s far more to discover. From Melaka’s century-old watering holes to Penang’s speakeasies that whisper stories of old China, these hidden gems are raising the bar across Malaysia.

A hundred years of spirits and stories

Along the narrow streets of Kampung Jawa stands Sin Hiap Hin: a living relic from a bygone era. With space for barely ten patrons, its weathered wooden stools and simple counter have witnessed British soldiers, Japanese officers, and generations of locals over nearly a century. The ever-charming Aunty Lee, custodian of this tiny haven, is always ready to pour local brews and trade stories. Just remember: this is a day drinker’s paradise; doors close by 5pm sharp.

Penang’s pioneer speakeasy

Before speakeasies became the buzzword of Penang’s nightlife, Magazine 63 was already paving the way. Once a humble furniture shop, it’s now transformed into a dimly lit den of red lanterns, paper umbrellas, and poetic Chinese couplets. Its signature drink, Invincible East, brings together vodka, coconut, melon, and pineapple for a tropical fusion that lives up to its name. For something timeless, try the Sultan Negroni, a royal twist on the Italian classic.

From brothel to bar

Housed within the storied Chong Tien building – once a high-end brothel from the 1880s – Manchu Bar now thrives as a sultry Chinese opera-themed speakeasy. Red lanterns cast a warm glow over carved wood panels as bartenders shake up everything from a classic Jungle Bird to a playful Popcorn Piña Colada. The space blends Penang’s layered past with a cocktail culture that’s entirely modern, making it one of the island’s most atmospheric nightspots.

Wine, refined and redefined

Located above craft beer bar Kiki Lalat, Asip is the only wine lounge in Ipoh that specialises in natural wines. The selection spans boutique vineyards from Spain, Italy, and France, alongside local Tuak for a Malaysian touch. But Asip isn’t just about the pour; in this intimate space, gastronomy meets artistry. Its private dining experiences pair each course with a curated bottle, creating a dinner worth lingering over.

Where time stands still

On the corner of Jalan Bijeh Timah sits a bar frozen beautifully in time. Past the saloon-style outer facade and swing doors, a kopitiam-like layout of bright pink walls, a striking green floor, and old-school posters greets customers. This no-frills spot doesn’t serve heavy meals, but it's the go-to for a cold glass of beer, light bites, and great conversations.
