Private jet allegedly link to Papua corruption case
Indonesia’s Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) suspects that funds from an alleged corruption case involving the former Governor of Papua were used to purchase a private jet. The case centers on the misuse of the Operational Support Fund and funds for the Papua Province Regional Head Service Improvement Program. The state losses are estimated to reach IDR 1.2 trillion. Investigators believe that a portion of these funds financed a private jet, which is currently located outside of Indonesia.
Giant Sea Wall project to resume under Prabowo administration
President Prabowo Subianto has confirmed the continuation of the Giant Sea Wall project along Java’s northern coast. Aiming to combat coastal erosion, the infrastructure plan spans approximately 500 kilometers from Banten to Gresik. To accelerate progress, Prabowo plans to establish an Authority Body responsible for overseeing the project. With a projected cost of up to USD 80 billion, the initiative is open to foreign investment and forms part of long-standing development plans for the region.
China opens visa-free transit to Indonesian travellers
From July 12, China will allow Indonesian passport holders to transit through the country visa-free for up to 240 hours, or 10 days, en route to a third destination. This new policy brings the total number of eligible countries to 55. Indonesian travelers can enter through 60 designated ports across 24 provincial-level regions, including popular destinations like Beijing, Shanghai, and Yunnan. Valid travel documents and confirmed onward travel are required for entry.
Three nickel mining companies sanctioned in Raja Ampat
Three nickel mining companies operating in Raja Ampat, Southwest Papua, have had their permits temporarily suspended due to suspected environmental violations. The Ministry of Environment and Forestry confirmed that the companies are being investigated for damaging activities in the ecologically sensitive area. State-owned PT Gag Nikel, which also operates in the region, is not among the companies under scrutiny. Public concern over mining in Raja Ampat continues to grow amid visible environmental degradation and local resistance, with activists demanding the government ban mining activities in the area.
Pay bump for junior judges
President Prabowo has announced a significant salary increase for junior judges, stating that a 280 per cent rise will take effect this year. The announcement was made during the inauguration of 1,451 new judges across four judicial categories: general, religious, administrative, and military courts. The policy is part of the government’s effort to improve judicial welfare and ensure the judiciary’s independence and professionalism.
