Orera wa Star!: Malaysia Dining Picks

Here’s some hot omakase spots in Malaysia that have gotten a Michelin nod. Omakase, which translates to “I leave the details up to you”, is a popular chef-curated dinner experience that’s becoming increasingly popular in Kuala Lumpur. While the city is brimming with omakase restaurants, how do you identify the creme de la creme? We’ll take you through some of the best Michelin-selected omakase experiences for your next dining adventure.

Sushi Taka

It’s no surprise that Sushi Taka has earned a spot in the Michelin Guide again this year, as it’s long been known for its authentic bites made with the finest and freshest seasonal ingredients flown in from Japan. Using sushi rice from a town in Niigata Prefecture and fish from Tokyo’s Toyosu Fish Market, the menu features dishes crafted with intricate techniques from the legendary sushi master, Chef Takashi Saito, who is currently based at Sushi Saito in Tokyo.

We highly recommend indulging in its 18-course premium omakase comprising 10 nigiri sushi, seven appetisers, and a sushi roll.

Ushi

As the first and only restaurant serving Ozaki beef in Malaysia, dining at Ushi is the epitome of luxury. With its intimate setting of only 12 seats, expect to savour an omakase kaiseki-style menu highlighting the exclusive beef flown all the way from Miyazaki Prefecture.

The beef is prepared in various ways, including stewed, grilled and fried, while other premium ingredients like sea urchin, caviar, yuba, and kombu complete the omakase experience.

Sushi Ori

Founded by Japanese chef Hideaki Oritsuki, who has made a home for himself in Malaysia for over a decade, Sushi Ori is a hidden gem renowned locally for its exquisite omakase courses. The restaurant uses sushi rice sourced from Akita Prefecture alongside a secret vinegar mix, while seasonal ingredients are flown in from Japan three times a week.

With only eight seats at the counter, it’s recommended that you reserve your spot in advance for a chance to indulge in this exclusive encounter.

Sushi Masa by Ishibashi

Building on the success of his famed Edomae-style sushi restaurant in Tokyo, renowned Chef Masakazu Ishibashi ventures into Kuala Lumpur with Sushi Masa. Rooted in the traditions of 200-year-old Japanese Edo-style cuisine, the restaurant offers omakase menus with creative twists, like pairing botan ebi with egg yolk sauce and caviar.

Its nigiri sushi are made with top-notch ingredients flown in from Japan and is bursting with umami. It’s an experience for both the eyes and the palate.

This chic tempura bar uses seasonal ingredients from Japan and local sustainable farms right here in Malaysia. With meticulous care, they turn them into tempura dishes that achieve a delicate balance between taste and texture. Expect to indulge in classic favourites like shrimp and eel to innovative creations like wagyu beef with Comte cheese.
